William was my great grandfather, and an amazing man in my eyes. He spoiled me rotten any chance he got, and even when he couldn’t stand in the yard to play softball with me anymore, he would sit in his chair to do it. When I was young, he had told me one day that he wasn’t long for this earth and one day he’d be meeting the man upstairs. He did his best to explain what was happening to me, since I was still very young, and asked me to promise I would never hate him if his illness made him mean.
For those of you who don’t know, Poppy died from complications from dementia. A ruthless, and truly evil disease that took such an important part of my life away from me not long after my 16th birthday. I’m 21 now Poppy, and I still could never hate you. Maybe I’m writing this for my family, maybe I’m writing this for myself. I don’t rightly know. But, I do know that I miss this man more than I could reasonably explain.
I love you Pa, and I hope you can see my boys from where ever you are. I know you’d love them just as much as I do. You owe me a tootsie roll and a cheese sandwich when I get to where you are old man. May god rest your soul.
