Tommy was one of my best High School friends. He kept all his friends cars running and the time we spent in his family garage kept us out of trouble. One great guy and he will be missed.

I first worked with Tommy at IBM in !970 ... he was my manager and found him to be a great guy....... he was not from the corporate mold, which suited me fine, but he was a true gentleman, intelligent, and a great sense of humor....... we shared a love of stock cars and I watched his success at that (27N)...... as the years progressed and we went on different assignments we would often meet in the halls and catch up and share a few laughs....... Tommy was one of the best I ever worked with..... thanks for the memories Tommy....... my condolences to his family
and I want them to know he was greatly respected
by his coworkers.

I first met Tom when I was about 13 years old thru Big John McCleary racking leafs for Tom and his mother. At 15 with Big John, to the Garage where Tom and the guys would be working on his stock car (Middletown Modifieds), and I never left. Help to build 3 stock cars, I was in Tom and Dottie’s wedding, I was able to drive both of their GTX Hemi’s (67,70), and I invited to many of their boat outings and enjoyed their boat and the yacht club as much as they did. Tom was one of the Greatest Teachers one could as to be around, I was one of the lucky ones. If you had a problem and things didn’t work, you always could count on Tom for help and in resent years I was able to return the help I looked for to helping Tom when ever I could. Tom, You are now and will always be missed.

I met Tommy when I was about 12, through my brother Charlie. They were all into Stock Cars, so it became a Saturday night thing for the neighborhood kids to pile into Big John’s truck and go to the races to watch Tommy and Johnny O race.
I’m now 16 and after a few fails with other drivers, Tommy offers to teach me to drive. I figure, he has nerves of steel, he’s a stock car driver, so he can handle it.
So here we go, Tommy picks me up in a 66/67 Toyota Corolla, 3 speed on the column, Yes, stick shift. There’ll be no stalling out. My lessons were 2-3 times a week, 1-2 hours of driving, sometimes longer. After some basics, right to the steep hill to test me on that no stalling out, no rolling back, hold that clutch thing. Yep Park drive, that hill going down to the yacht club. But I did it.
Parallel parking on Liberty street, while people were all around, watching my every move. driving up 9W and telling me to pull off the highway and get back on - Without Crashing! He would step on the gas pedal while I was driving. He would do all kinds of crazy stuff, preparing me for anything.
Taking me out on 84, learning how to pass and return to the right lane. Which amazes me how many people still don’t know how to do that. (My dad was one of those people)
Then its curvy Rt 218- my lesson on approaching curves - all that’s going through my head is “Don’t hit the mountain “ and dont drive off it either. I think that was the only time I made Him a little nervous taking those curves. Little did I know I’d be driving that mountain A Lot.
During that lesson we see a sign “Welcome to Sterling Forest”, I have no idea where I was, but Tommy does and had me quickly turn around in the dark to head back home. Many years later, Tommy would mention that little road trip lesson and how he didn’t want to be accused of taking a minor across state lines.
I had to learn how to change a tire and the oil. And yes I have changed my own oil, but never had to change a flat. I have people to do those things for me now.
When it was time for my road test, It was up a street, make a left, do your 3 pt turn, parallel park and back to where we started. I don’t think it took 10 min. All I could think about was - DONT STALL! 2 days later I got my license in the mail.
Everything I know about driving, all the crazy stuff he had me do or did while I was driving, prepared me for the idiots out there. I dont think I would have made my first solo road trip to florida when I was 19 and my recent road trip across half the US, without his patience and nerves of steel.
Yes I will admit I have a lead foot ( 2 speeding tickets) and have been called. Jackie Andretti. But I am proud to tell people I learned to drive from a stock car driver, Tommy Nott!
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
