What a lovely person Jane was. I so enjoyed chatting with her over the years and talking about books and her reflections on life. She was such a gracious and kind person. I haven't seen her since Memorial Day a year ago, the last time Paul and I were in town. We woke her from a deep nap, and she snapped immediately into a delighted smile -- certainly not the way I wake from a deep sleep!! Mattie and I had fun staying with her one night in her lovely home in Newburgh when a snowstorm unexpectedly turned an afternoon visit into an overnight. She had some tough times as a girl and a young woman, but I would never have guessed that. Far from embittering her, she instead retained a very nice spirit of delight and gratitude about her. I'm sorry she is gone.
