John F. “Jack” Bernard Sr. of Walden, NY passed away on March 14, 2018 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY. The son of the late Fred and Ada Edwards Bernard, he was born on January 8, 1931 in Wallkill, NY. He was 87 years old. Jack leaves behind his loving wife, Esther Haun Bernard, at home. Jack worked as a Toll Collector for the NYS Bridge Authority on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge for 37 years. He was a Life Member of the Enterprise Steamer Co. of the Walden Fire Department and served as an Officer in the Walden Fire Police. In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, John F. Bernard Jr. of Walden; daughters, Jacqueline Rose and her husband, Daniel, of Pine Bush, Joann Franz of Wallkill, Janice Kennedy and her husband, Frank, of Walden; sister, Alice Gillotti of Walden; grandchildren, Toby, Tabitha, Shannon, Suzette, John III, Jeniffer, Patrick, Jeremy, Matthew, Frankie and Emilee; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his son, James Bernard, daughter, Debora Call, brother, Fred, and sister, Edith. A memorial visitation will be held from 2-4PM on Sunday, March 18th at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St. Walden, NY 12586. Services will follow at 4PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Jack’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the charity of one’s choice.
