Calvin C. Thorp of Maybrook, NY, a retired corrections officer for the NYS Dept. of corrections, Wallkill and a retired employee of the Village of Maybrook water treatment plant, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013 at Valley View Nursing Home, Goshen. He was 88 years old. The son of William and Harriet Smith Thorp, he was born on November 5, 1924 in Washingtonville, NY. Calvin was a WWII US Army Combat Medic earning a Silver Star Medal in the Battle of Peylo in a place called Bloody Gulch. He was a 67 year member of the Maybrook Fire Dept., a member of the Maybrook VFW and the American Legion. He loved bowling, camping, fishing and hunting. The family would like to thank the staff at the Valley View Nursing Home. Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Margaret DelSanto Thorp at home; a son, Paul R. Thorp and his wife, Jean of Sackets Harbor, NY; 2 daughters, Linda M. VanWagenen of Greenville, NY and Kim M. Jordan and her husband, Randy of Maybrook; brother-in-law, Samuel DelSanto of Montgomery; sister-in-law, Rosanne Kearney of Maybrook; 5 grandchildren, Janine, Mark, Calvin, Michael and Shannon; 16 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Sylvester Thorp, son-in-law, Jack VanWagenen and grandson, John VanWagenen. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 from 4-8 PM at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St., Walden, NY. Services will be on Friday, June 14 at 10 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Montgomery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Assumption, Maybrook.
