Obituary of Robert Glenn Wynkoop

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Glenn Wynkoop of Walden passed away at Vassar Bros. Hospital on Tuesday, December 29, 2015. He was 82 years old. The son of the late Howard Kittle Wynkoop and Gladys May Hoyle, he was born on November 6, 1933 in Walden, NY. Robert was a graduate of Walden High School in 1952. He served his country in the United States Air Force (Airman 1st class) serving in Greenville, SC during the Korean Conflict 1952-1956. Robert later became a Corrections Officer at Wallkill Correctional Facility where he worked for many years prior to his disability. “Despite the adversity that was handed his way with the untimely loss of his daughter, Katherine and a legally blind condition that prevented him from driving and working since 1977; Robert strived to remain positive and uplifting in the years that followed. “Bob” had quite the sense of humor and enjoyed his daily interactions with friends at the Union House. Robert extensively researched and had a passion for his family genealogy and took pride that his grandchildren were 13th generation descendants of Cornelius Wynkoop who settled in Ulster County in the early 1600s. His family and especially his grandchildren: Sara, Christopher and Matthew were the “light of his life” and he enjoyed sharing their accomplishments with everyone he encountered. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Mountain View Nursing Home, Vassar Brothers Medical Center; especially Lori Ryan who gave him great care in his final days.” He was a member and former vestryman of the St. Andrew’s Church in Walden. Robert was a member of the Wallkill Central School Board from 1968-1978. He was also a member of the Wallkill Ambulance Corp, Walden Seniors, Walden Community Council and the Walden VFW Post # 2946. Robert is survived by Charlene Diane Wynkoop of Wallkill; son, Derrik Robert Wynkoop and his wife, Allison Ann of Walden; grandchildren: Sara Katherine Wynkoop of Boston, MA, Christopher Derrik Wynkoop and Matthew Reid Wynkoop of Walden; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Katherine Ann Wynkoop; brother, Douglas Howard Wynkoop; sister, Joyce Dianne DePew. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday January 3rd at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, 39 Orchard St., Walden, NY 12586. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 4th at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 15 Walnut St. Walden, NY 12586. Cremation will be private.
