George H. Shurter Jr. of Searsville, NY, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 85 years old.
The son of the late George H. Shurter Sr. and Gladys Elizabeth Taylor. He was born July 15, 1930 in Ramapo, NY
George was a retired Machinist/Tool and Dye maker from Active Specialty Lighting Company in Newburgh, NY.
George honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the US Army. He received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze service stars, the United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
George spent his life helping others. Known as a “Jack of all Trades”, he was your go to guy when things needed to be done. He was always the first to lend a helping hand. A hard working man and a loving father, husband, brother, friend, he was the rock of his family. He will be greatly missed by many.
George is survived by his four children; sons, George H. Shurter III of Middletown, NY, Brian Shurter of North Port, FL, Wayne Shurter of Walker Valley NY; daughter, Debra Decker of Pine Bush, NY.; sister, Geraldine DeGroodt of Wallkill, NY; many grandchildren; great granddaughter; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday June 17, 2016 from 12-2PM at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home, Inc. 39 Orchard St. Walden, NY 12586. Burial of ashes will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Montgomery, NY with Military Honors.
In-lieu of flowers friends may make contributions to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan.
