Jeremy Jon Smit Obituary

Jeremy Jon Smit of Walden, NY passed away at home with his family by his side on January 10, 2026 after a valiant 7 year battle with cancer. He was born on September 27, 1976 in Newburgh N.Y. to Fred and the late Karen (Yancewicz) Smit.

Jeremy graduated from Valley Central High School, Class of 1995, where he excelled in football and wrestling. His wrestling accolades are still proudly displayed in the high school wrestling room. Jeremy was a talented musician and played bass guitar in many bands in his younger years. He continued his studies and wrestling career at Rider University. Years later he was introduced to the love of his life, Megan Lacy, who grew up 2 blocks from his childhood home. She soon became his wife. They were blessed with twins, Emily and Mason, who became his greatest pride and joy. The twins were his source of strength and determination to fight his cancer for so many years. Jeremy sat proudly and loudly at softball games and firehouse events to support his children in everything they did.

Jeremy was a past member of Teamsters Local 445 for over 20 years and most recently worked in the Town of Shawangunk Highway Department.

Jeremy is survived by his wife, Megan K. (Lacy) Smit and his children; Emily Kay Smit and Mason Jon Smit, all of Walden.

He is also survived by his father, Fred Smit (Nancy Vendetti); brother, Jason Smit(Stacey); mother-in-law, Kathleen Campbell (Douglas); father-in-law, Michael Lacy(Kathy); sister-in-law, Kara Lacy; brothers-in-law; Sean Lacy(Joanna) and Ryan Lacy(Katie); Nieces and Nephews; Jakob Smit, Jacklyn Struble, Rhea and Aris Lacy. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends especially the infamous "Scuba Squad" who have been beside him throughout it all.

He is predeceased by his mother, Karen Smit.

Jeremy felt strongly that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a College Education Fund for Emily and Mason. Contributions can be sent to: Smit kids college fund c/o Kara Lacy, 59 Maple Street Walden, New York 12586.
