John W Borland Obituary
John W. Borland of Poughkeepsie and Wanaksink Lake, formerly of Montgomery, Walden, and Leesburg, Florida, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 6, 2025. He was 76. John was born on August 15, 1948 in Newburgh, NY to the late Wilfred Borland and Doris Tuthill Borland. He was a graduate of Valley Central High School in 1966. He served his country honorably in the United States Army. John graduated from Syracuse University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
After the Army, he began a long and successful career in banking in 1972. He started with Orange County Trust Company in 1981, was named to the Board of Directors in 1987 and in 1991 was named President and Chief Executive Officer. He served in that position until retiring in 2006.
During this time, he also contributed extensively to his community through his service to the Orange County Community College Educational Foundation, the Orange County Industrial Development Agency, the Middletown Industrial Expansion Corporation, the Middletown High School Academy of Finance, the Middletown Rotary Club, St. Theresa's Nursing Home, the Arts Council of Orange County and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Janice M. Bartle Borland, at home; sons, Steven Borland (Meghan) of Pleasant Valley and Matthew Borland (Caitlin) of Charlottesville, VA; sisters, Nancy Conroy (Tom) of Newburgh, and Jeanne Chute of Center Harbor, New Hampshire; five grandchildren, Emma, Amelia, Kellan, Caroline and Andrew; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and infant son, Andrew. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice 374 Violet Ave. Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 and/or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK Kids, pediatric program). Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 21, 2025 from 2-3:30 PM at the Gridley-Horan Funeral Home in Walden. Prayer Services will be held at 3:30 PM at the funeral home following the visitation. A reception will follow.
