Obituary of John Henry Thorp

John Henry "Wooper" Thorp, 77, of New Bern, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024. John was born in Goshen, New York, on July 16, 1947, to the late Sylvester and Lucille (Barnum) Thorp. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, leaving a lasting legacy of love and kindness. John enjoyed a fulfilling career, retiring from Camp Sea Gull, and was honored to serve as president of the Little Swift Creek Fire Department, where he made many lasting friendships. John served in many different aspects in the Maybrook Fire Department and Orange County, New York, as the Past Chief, Commissioner, and Chairman of the Board. He was Life Member of Maybrook Engine Company for 59 years, and the Superintendent of the Villages of Maybrook and Washingtonville. John was a life member of the Orange County Fire Chief's Association and the Orange County Highway Superintendents Association. John is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen Thorp; his son, Charlie Woznick and wife Jennifer; daughters, Colette Page and husband Todd, and Kelly Griffin and partner Ron Laubenheimer; brother, Matt Thorp and wife Denise; sisters, Sara Monck and husband James, Lucille Thorpe, Mary "Cookie" Cushman, and Judy DiTrocchio and husband Ralph; as well as his cherished grandchildren, Charlie Woznick Jr., Tylor Woznick, Matthew Page, Alyssa Scholz, and Dylan Scholz. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Colton, Wyatt, Shane, Victoria, Lilianna, Daphnie, Matthew, Malcolm, and Myles. His faithful English Bulldog, grandson, Camo, who was a constant companion by his side. In addition, John had many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins who were by his side. John was predeceased by his son-in-law, Lee Griffin, and his sister, Barbara Ates. North Carolina services with firematic honors were held Sunday, November 17 at 2pm, at Little Swift Creek Fire Department, 4580 US 17, Ernul NC. A Celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11 AM at Maybrook Fire Department, 204 Wallace Ave, Maybrook NY. Interment of ashes will be private at Brick Church Cemetery, Montgomery NY. In lieu of flowers, John “Wooper”, and family, ask that donations be made to one of the following: Little Swift Creek Fire Department, Maybrook Fire Department, where he dedicated 59 years of fire services to his communities, SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House, where he compassionately & comfortably spent his final days in the loving care of staff and family. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his generosity, spirit, and unwavering love for his family and community.
